In the summer of 2021 I felt at one with the medium and with the natural world. Pulled by conflicting emotions, I pushed light and focus to their edges. A few words from my Japanese lessons became the frame for these images.

一期一会 Ichigo Ichie

“Once, this meeting.” Each encounter is unrepeatable, like S’Olinaxu blooming in southern Sardinia, never the same twice.

無常, mujō

Impermanence. Even what’s closest to us decays, like the persimmons by my garden.

葉隠, hagakure

“Hidden among leaves.” Duty first: act sincerely and stay disciplined, even when the path is overgrown.

面影, omokage

A lingering trace - the face as memory’s outline. Remember people by the echoes they leave in us.
